Кейт Джарретт: Если бы я писал автобиографию, то, наверное, бросил бы взгляд назад, в прошлое, и смог бы ответить на этот вопрос. У меня не было "голубых периодов", но были точки, пройдя которые я начинал делать что-то совсем иначе. Можно назвать это "главами" моей жизни. Так было, например, когда я впервые сел за клавесин... И я не мог бы жить так, как люди, которые занимаются чем-то неделю, а на следующей все бросают и начинают заниматься чем-то совсем другим. Я бы тогда стал кретином. Когда я начал интересоваться клавесином, это была новая "глава" моей жизни. Несомненно, мои композиции можно назвать другой "главой". Однажды Луис Бунюэль сказал: "Это будет мой последний фильм". Есть артисты, которые всю свою жизнь работают и делают снова и снова то, что уже было сделано ими. То, что сказал Бунюэль, можно интерпретировать так: "Я осознал нечто в себе и я должен ему служить." Артисты должны чаще об этом задумываться, ведь искусство - это не мельница. Когда люди произносят "броситься в воду", они слышат "сделай это!" Я же считаю, что Луис поступил совсем иначе - он сказал: "Я останавливаюсь". И это совсем не звучало как "я боюсь, что меня остановят". "Главы" моей жизни, части моей карьеры могут интерпретироваться таким же образом...

The Moth and the Flame is one of Keith Jarrett's underappreciated efforts. Part One of the CD contains Jarrett's organ and sax work. The music is somewhat dark in mood and recalls an earlier album, "Hymns/Spheres". Part Two is a studio recording of one of his extended piano improvisations. Like most ECM disks, the recording quality is pristine. Part Two has more of a classical feel to it than many of his solo concerts. In style and recording quality the album would compare favorably to "Staircase." In my opinion, "Staircase" is Jarrett's strongest effort and this album is not far behind.
